For students comparing degrees, an AI label is only the beginning of the inquiry. The more useful questions are how much additional study it requires, what problems the coursework addresses and how the learning fits a primary discipline.
In June, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), based in Nansha, announced “Major + AI” and an AI minor for September 2026. University announcement.
Two pathways, different commitments
“Major + AI” adds 21–24 AI credits to the requirements of the student’s regular major and integrates AI into the final project or thesis. The university says the pathway will be noted on the degree certificate. The AI minor adds 18 credits, with completion recorded on the transcript. These differences matter when assessing workload and the kind of evidence a graduate can show of their learning. Credits and qualification records.
An additional pathway is a commitment of time as well as a credential. Ask how its courses fit the normal study plan, which prerequisites apply and whether required classes can be taken without creating timetable conflicts. A persuasive programme description should help you understand the work expected, beyond the names of the modules.
For project-based learning, examine how students define a question, obtain suitable data and evaluate the result. A polished demonstration can look impressive while leaving its limitations unexplained. The ability to identify unsuitable data or a misleading output is part of assessing a project’s quality.
The September intake provides context, not proof of outcomes
The university reported that its undergraduate opening ceremony took place on 31 August, welcoming 532 first-year students, with the autumn semester beginning on 1 September. Its account describes faculty discussion of AI-related courses, interdisciplinary projects and assessment. The June announcement concerned 450 mainland recruitment places. The later 532-student cohort covers a different population; neither figure establishes places available through a particular admissions route next year. Mainland recruitment announcement.
This guide has not independently observed delivery of the new pathways. Students considering them should request the current curriculum, entry conditions and advising arrangements from the university.
Connect the technical work to a real question
HKUST(GZ)’s Society Hub identifies areas including carbon neutrality and climate change, financial technology, innovation policy and entrepreneurship, and urban governance and design. They suggest useful questions to ask about interdisciplinary study. Could a technical project evaluate energy use, test assumptions in a financial model or examine access to urban services? These are illustrative possibilities, not projects this article claims the university has delivered. In each case, a student would need both technical methods and an understanding of the people or systems being studied.
For a reader interested in the Greater Bay Area, the practical test is whether a programme helps connect an academic interest with a problem they want to understand. The campus location alone cannot establish the quality of that connection.
Check the admissions route that applies to you
The university’s international-applicant page directs eligible applicants through its online admissions system and requires them to meet general and English-language requirements. Different applicant categories use different routes, so a mainland recruitment figure or another student’s experience cannot substitute for the instructions that apply to your qualifications. For a future application, make a short comparison sheet: main degree requirements, additional AI credits, project supervision, assessment, costs and the applicable admissions deadline.
